A unique grassland ecosystem in Velavadar, famed for its population of Blackbucks and Indian Wolves.
Located in the Bhavnagar district, Blackbuck National Park (Velavadar) is a hidden jewel of Gujarat. Unlike the dense deciduous forests found elsewhere in the state, Velavadar boasts a unique savannah-like grassland ecosystem. This open terrain provides visitors with clear, unobstructed views of wildlife, making it a photographer's paradise.
The park was established primarily to conserve the Blackbuck, an elegant Indian antelope known for its spiral horns and contrasting coat. Today, it is home to one of the largest populations of Blackbucks in India. However, the park is equally famous for its predators. It is one of the best places in the world to spot the elusive Indian Grey Wolf and the Striped Hyena.
Birdwatchers flock to Velavadar to witness the majestic Harriers. The park serves as the world's largest communal roosting site for Harriers, particularly Montagu's Harrier, Pallid Harrier, and Marsh Harrier. Additionally, the endangered Lesser Florican can be seen leaping above the tall grasses during the monsoon breeding season.
The best time to visit Blackbuck National Park is from October to March, when the weather is cool and migratory birds are present. The winter months also coincide with the rutting season of the Blackbucks, offering spectacular behavioral sightings. Early morning and late evening safaris are recommended to catch predators on the move.
Whether you are a wildlife enthusiast eager to spot a wolf pack or a traveler seeking the serenity of golden grasslands, Velavadar offers a distinctive and memorable safari experience in the heart of Gujarat.
