Formerly known as the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, a paradise for ornithologists.
Keoladeo National Park is one of the world's most important bird breeding and feeding grounds. Located in Bharatpur, Rajasthan, this 29 sq. km mosaic of dry grasslands, woodlands, woodland swamps, and wetlands is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was historically a duck-hunting reserve for the Maharajas but is now a strictly protected sanctuary.
Every year, thousands of migratory birds, including the rare Siberian Crane (historically), visit the park for wintering. It hosts over 370 species of birds, including Painted Storks, Pelicans, Cranes, and Eagles. The park also supports a rich diversity of fauna like Golden Jackals, Striped Hyenas, Fishing Cats, and Pythons.
Unlike other national parks, Keoladeo offers a peaceful, noise-free experience. Safari here is done via Cycle Rickshaws (driven by trained birders), Bicycles, or on foot. Boat safaris are also available in the wetlands during periods of good water levels.
