A hidden wilderness in the Sidhi district of Madhya Pradesh, offering a pristine and crowd-free jungle experience.
Sanjay-Dubri Tiger Reserve holds a special place in wildlife history. It was in these very forests of the former Rewa state that the world's first white tiger, Mohan, was discovered in the wild in 1951. Today, the reserve is a sprawling expanse of sal forests, bamboo thickets, and riverine belts, covering over 1,674 sq. km.
Unlike the busier parks like Bandhavgarh, Sanjay-Dubri offers a serene and raw jungle experience. It is home to a healthy population of Royal Bengal Tigers and Leopards. The park is especially renowned for its high density of Sloth Bears, making it one of the best places in Central India to observe their behavior.
The landscape is drained by the scenic Gopad and Banas rivers, which provide excellent spots for birdwatching and spotting thirst-quenching wildlife during the summer. The reserve connects to the Guru Ghasidas National Park in Chhattisgarh, forming a massive wildlife corridor.
The primary safari zones are Dubri and Bastua. Visitors here can enjoy long drives through dense canopies without the rush of tourist gypsies. The park also shelters the Indian Gaur, Spotted Deer, Sambar, and over 300 species of birds.
For travelers seeking the 'real' jungle—quiet, mysterious, and steeped in history—Sanjay-Dubri is an unmissable destination.
