A blend of royal history and rich biodiversity located in the Shivpuri district of Madhya Pradesh.
Madhav National Park is one of the oldest parks in Madhya Pradesh, historically serving as the hunting ground for the Mughal Emperors and the Maharajas of Gwalior. The park offers a unique combination of wildlife, dense forests, and architectural wonders. It is part of the upper Vindhyan hills and presents a diverse landscape of plateaus, lakes, and forested slopes.
The centerpiece of the park is the **Sakhya Sagar Lake**, a Ramsar site which supports a thriving ecosystem of aquatic life. It is home to a large population of Marsh Crocodiles and offers excellent opportunities for birdwatching, especially for migratory species like geese, pochards, and pintails during winter.
While tigers are being reintroduced to restore its former glory, Madhav is currently famous for its **Leopards**, Sloth Bears, Striped Hyenas, and large herds of Nilgai and Chinkara (Indian Gazelle). The dense dry deciduous forest provides ample cover for these elusive predators.
A major attraction within the park is **George Castle**, built in 1911 by Jivaji Rao Scindia for an overnight stay of King George V. Located at the highest point of the park, it offers a panoramic view of the forest and the lake, especially spectacular at sunset.
Located just off the Agra-Mumbai highway, Madhav National Park is an accessible and serene getaway that perfectly mixes nature, history, and adventure.
